Dancer and self-taught photographer, we had discovered the work of Luis Alberto Rodriguezlast year at the 32nd Hyères International Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories Festival. His series “Patina.” was awarded the City of Hyères Public Prize and the brand new American Vintage Prize. One year after these clichés which put in scene individuals covered with clothes in graceful and moving poses, evoking his initial training of dancer, Luis Alberto Rodriguez returns in the”city of the palm trees” to expose at the Tower of the Templars, in the heart of the historical center of Hyères, the result of this partnership with the Marseilles clothing brand. “A Million Little Bells.” is to be discovered until May 26, 2018. Exploration.

This right balance between the bodies and their environments and the sometimes surrealistic poses were decisive in the choice of this photographer by American Vintage. Luis Alberto Rodriguez was invited to create a fashion series inspired by the brand’s collections, inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s book, “The Little Prince.”. Besides, the title, which means“a million bells,” evokes the final passage of this adventure between the author and the little prince: “You’ll have five hundred million bells, I’ll have five hundred million fountains… The images follow the wanderings of a character influenced by the beings met through reading this book. He decides to become like them and disguises himself by adopting their appearance. King, pink, snake… In turn, he impregnates himself with these different characters like a world explorer. Luis Alberto Rodriguez creates a dreamlike adventure in an imaginary and inspired universe. The arid Italian earth, a reference to the lunar soils of the planets explored by the little prince, contrasts with the colours of the clothes, just like this raw minerality which softens in contact with the cottony textures. “This job took a lot of preparation. Then we took all the pictures in two days in Sicily. This island was perfectly suited to my purpose for the different landscapes that it shelters: an arid volcanic land, the sea of an enchanting blue and the radiant light” confides the photographer.

“A Million Little Bells” is a diary that traces the exploration of a world with a childlike gaze. The role of clothing carries a dreamy and social stake. Are they not the celebrations of our personality as the ramparts of our soul? This series was exhibited in November 2017 at the American Vintage boutique at 19 rue du Temple in Paris on the occasion of Paris Photo. Luis Alberto Rodriguez confided to us that he was now working on a personal series in which he would celebrate the Dominican Republic, his native country 33rd Hyères International Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories Festival for the 2018 American Vintage Award. This was awarded to the Dutch photographer Sarah Mei Herman. She will follow in the footsteps of her American colleague in order to produce a singular series. Young talents to discover and follow.
