Lace and love dreams for Christine Mathieu
#CALAIS Fashion accessory by extension, the lace headdress is of course on a common object in itself but there is also everything that one feels behind it, this call to the elsewhere, a little like a path to memory, that of the past, of prosperous villages, that of headdresses reserved for festive or solemn moments.
Until February 24, the Cité de la Dentelle et de la Mode de Calais is offering a very beautiful presentation of this obscure object of desire with “Apparitions, photographie de Christine Mathieu”.
In the contemporary gallery that closes the tour of the permanent collections, the museum offers a visual dialogue between these precious headwear, fine works of poetic lace that call for travel and letting go.
The artist has chosen from the public collections of the Maison des dentelles d’Argentan, the Musée de Normandie de Caen, the Musée des Beaux-arts et de la dentelle d’Alençon or the Musée des Traditions et Arts normands de Martainville ou Granville, pieces recalling all the delicacy of the caps and other capelines.
The prints, large formats and in dark light, feature little girls wearing holiday headdresses. Christine Mathieu shifts the simple purpose of a fashion history by capturing its complex architecture. Without falling into the easy inventory that such a dive into the collections could have led her, the subtle scenography makes them interact with the lace pieces integrated into the device.
The sometimes international reputation of Norman houses depends on these spider creations and the embroidered dreams of little hands. The shooting becomes all the more precise as does this sure gesture of the lacemaker, when the faces are irradiated by the whiteness of the cotton.
And we leave, with our hearts moved, we could invent a thousand stories of encounters, a thousand love dreams that these objects have woven into our imagination.
