#MONTREAL Jack Lazare is a businessman who has been passionate about photography for nearly twenty years. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) is showcasing a large part of its collection, that is, a hundred prints by both Canadian and international artists in a very beautiful exhibition that runs until April 28, 2019.

A photographic collection often begins with a personal relationship with the image and/or artist. For Jack Lazare, the retrospective on Julia Margaret Cameron in 1999 at MoMa will be the trigger. From August Sander to Edward Burtynsky, Saul Leiter, Nan Goldin, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Hannah Starkey and Thomas Struth, the selection and hanging are articulated around themes with conceptual values such as suspended time, the notion of passage or the loneliness and complexity of human relationships.

The exhibition is curated by Diane Charbonneau (curator of Modern Decorative Arts and Photography at the MBAM). It allows, by the variation of unifying themes, to bring out this “resilience” intrinsic to each collection. The curator has been able to create this common thread that leads us in the artistic process rather than in the succession of a list of names that guarantee the investment of its owner. Because it is often the pitfall of an exhibition devoted to a collection. It is necessary to know at the same time to sort, organize and dissociate the personality of the collector from the collection itself: an obligation and a necessity to understand the Man and his collection. Then it is necessary to know how to bring out the essence linked to the unconscious of the one who invests and who first acquires a part of his own history through each work.

“States of souls, spirit of place” is an exhibition that takes us to the open and imprecise borders of art and psychoanalysis. What if Jack Lazare’s office became the couch where to lie down and his photographs, infinite channels of our own relationship to photography.
