#NEW YORK In the middle of a crazy two-week period when art is king (ADAA The Art Show, Scope Art Fair, Armory Show), New York hosts the fifth edition of Art On Paper, an event that highlights the creative pluralities of this medium, which is more relevant than ever.

From March 08 to 10, some 100 galleries will present their best modern and contemporary paper-based works of art as well as special installations and innovative graphic focuses on how to push the boundaries of working on paper. A large part is also devoted to publishing and printing. Following the example of her French colleague Lyon Art Paper Art On Paper New York presents paper as a medium that transcends simple 2D to transform each drawing into a meaningful creation.

The deckled edge
As a key player in the art market, New York is a global crossroads for galleries and enlightened art lovers. It seems obvious that almost half of the galleries came from it, including the Accola Griefen Fine Art, the C21 Gallery, Susan Eley Fine Art and Cheryl Hazaz, joined by some from neighbouring states such as David Lusk Gallery in Memphis, Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami, F.L. Braswell Fine Art in Chicago and the e-studio in Seattle. These 83 American galleries are complemented by a few Canadian names (as Jones Gallery in Vancouver) and from very diverse backgrounds such as AC Contemporary Art in Buenos Aires, the Nil Gallery in Paris, Sim Smith in London, the Anna Laudel Gallery in Istanbul and the AroundSpace Gallery in Shanghai.

Immersive projects
Art on Paper projects are also interactive and immersive projects in order to push the limits of this medium. Among these proposals, Samuelle Green’s installation concentrating hundreds of thousands of hand-rolled paper cones, generally made up of paperback books intended for recycling or disposal. These decorate a hidden frame that transforms generally rectilinear spaces into organic and extraterrestrial environments. Further on, we will see Roland Poska’s Papestries, in partnership with the Jerald Melberg Gallery. This pioneer in the field of engraving and papermaking sought to extend and exceed the limits of its medium. Finally, Wendy Letven juxtaposes patterns and linear languages in a complex hanging paper cutting installation and explores the materiality of paper in the Meta Morphologies installation. Art On Paper NY marks its place in a drawing market that is more relevant than ever. Popular with collectors, amateurs and institutions, but also with artists who dare to use a new kind of accidental manipulation, drawing finds here a transformed primordiality.
