#PARIS Michael Scott paints circles on large enamelled aluminium paintings, as huge targets that are reminiscent of his early neo-expressionist experiments. And of course, the resulting effect is intensely optical

Each piece consists of one or more reading fields and consists of fine circular stripes. The black lines are first read as figures while the white lines seem to be on the floor because of the white of the surrounding wall. Very quickly, they develop, overcome common perceptual phenomena and disturb the physical habits, the visual balances of the observer

By discovering Michael Scott’s work, it is obvious affinities with Julio Le Parc that challenge us. But here the sharp precision is replaced by the hesitation of the human touch. Michael Scott claims the abstract approach of his circle paintings as a metaphor for his contemplation of the world, based on concept and no longer on style.

Scott’s process is systematic. Both confrontational and seductive by its illusions of flickering forms, painting obliterates any attempt to settle at an appropriate viewing distance.

Popularized recently by the exhibition at the Grand Palais and then at the Centre Pompidou, the kinetic approach remains, however, still an unknown pictorial movement, but which reminds us that the painting itself is more than a decorative object. You can see the artist’s action, you can feel his hand. The gesture is often very complex, meditative or even repetitive.”

Playing on colour and its inversions, or even variations in size and framing, the scenography, designed by Vincent Pécoil, creates a real irrepressible visual buzz.
