Meeting with Philippe Van Cauteren of the S.M.A.C.K. of Ghent
12.11.18
Lili Tisseyre

Philippe Van Cauteren, the artistic director of the Ghent S.M.A.K., was in 2015 the curator of the Iraq Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and the curator of the first Kathmandu Triennial (Nepal) in 2017. His project is to build a new museum for Ghent and to build more and more bridges with the Museum of Fine Arts,MSKv ery close, whose history he shares. The “Go & Return” route set up in October 2017 is a step in this direction.
We met him on the occasion of exhibitions dedicated to the Belgian painter Raoul De Keyser (1930-2012), the Chinese visual artist Zhang Peili (born in 1957) pioneer of video art while a focus on this medium in the collections is proposed with “Out of Time”.
Quote:“The museum is not a building, a shelter but a roof under which doubt can be preserved (…) If doubt is at the centre of our existence it is also for that of artists and the public. That’s why we need to humanize the museum.”
