#PARIS From November 6, 2018 to February 24, 2019, the Rodin Museum presents the sculptor’s collection of drawings. For the first time, the exhibition brings together 90 works on paper whose particularity is the cutting and assembly of glued figures, preserved in the museum. Playing on the spatialization of bodies, this process reveals bold, cut-out silhouettes and a highly modern dynamism.
If Rodin remains a sculptor in the eyes of the public, his drawings are, he said, “the key to my work”. Thus, the exhibition brings together nearly two hundred and fifty drawings. Thus the exhibition highlights one of the innovative modes of expression of the 20th century.
“I have a great weakness for these little sheets of paper,” he said again to show his attachment to his drawn work. From the very beginning, Rodin made drawings independently of his sculptures, which he executed according to a living model. He transfers his sketches, identifies the line that will sublimate him, sets the color using watercolor, cuts the figures, replaces them, assembles them to other shapes and gradually builds an unexpected device. He presents his drawings in all the exhibitions devoted to him, from Brussels, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague in 1899, to Paris in 1900. Then it was Prague in 1902 or Düsseldorf in 1904
The Rodin Museum preserves most of this drawn work, about 7500 drawings.
Designed and cut out, these drawings are not just technical accessories: they have conquered their status as works in their own right, whose dynamic silhouettes already herald Matisse’s modernity.
