#PARIS CUBISM 1907-1917 This is a major event held at the Centre Pompidou until 25 February 2019. It traces one of the most striking movements of the 20th century. Cubism constitutes a revolution in the world of painting, sculpture and influences architecture, literature, music
From its birth to its apogee, before its decline inherent in France’s entry into the Great War of 14, cubism remained that movement which obscured impressionism (even if its origins can be found in Paul Cézanne’s work) and opened the way to abstract art.
Dissected from every angle and divided into 13 sections, the three main periods (analytical, synthetic and orphic) appear chronologically in the different spaces under simple and evocative titles
They allow an understanding and a dive into the heart of the artists’ movement and approach (The sources of Cubism, primitivism, the relationship to Cézanne, the break-up of the homogeneous form, the letter and sign, the salons 1911-1912, collage and assembly, material and colour, sculpture, poets and critics, the salons 1913-1914 and finally the posterity of Cubism).
The visit begins with a set of Picasso where Braque comes to interfere, (as if to remind us that they are both at the origin of the movement), the rooms widen as we progress, the mixture is subtle between Picasso and Braque
At the bend of the “Salons Cubistes 1911-1912”, the paintings of Jean Metzinger, Fernand léger and Henri le Fauconnier shine, it’s magnificent
In the adjoining room, we notice a painting by Marcel Duchamp “Les joueurs d’échecs 1911” followed by drawings by Louis Marcoussis.
The room reserved for Henri Laurens (poems in prose 1915) legitimizes a little more this very coherent set. With “United”, Picabia penetrates space with these voluptuous movements, a mental recomposition that he plays in a set of vibrant colours
Then comes the War of 14, Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris will continue while the French leave for the front. The “flat, bland” blue of the reception room and the room where the sculptures are exhibited at the end of the journey accompanies us as a reminder of the colour of the pits of soldiers of the Great War?
“Cubism, 1907-1917” is inescapable, of a beauty that takes us away with this explosion of forms into different facets, this abandonment of the classical perspective, these small cubes, these edges that amplifies. Everything here is about interpretation. Ask yourself how to create a three-dimensional object (observed from different points of view), on a two-dimensional canvas? Only a large butcher shop could put an end to these reflections.
